Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is quite common - and this is not surprising when you realize that the shoulder is the most mobile of all our joints.

The reason for this mobility is a very small joint contact zone. This essentially means that the shoulder is quite unstable. That is why the shoulder muscles are so vital to a normally functioning shoulder.

Shoulder joint

There are two joints in the area of the shoulder. One of these two joints is located where the collarbone (clavicle) meets the tip of the shoulder bone (acromion).

The other is the junction of the upper arm bone (humerus) with the shoulder blade (scapula).

Chronic pain

Shoulder pain is defined as chronic when it has been present for longer than six months.

Chronic shoulder pain may arise because of osteoarthritis, instability [muscles are not strong enough or they are uncoordinated] or from a chronic injury that has failed to heal successfully.

Using TENS therapy for shoulder pain.

After a diagnosis of chronic or degenerative shoulder pain, your pain management plan will include several methods of pain relief and should offer drug-free options.

ActivBody is the TENS machine we suggest for chronic shoulder pain.

ActivBody electrotherapy can be used everyday - outside the clinic - for drug-free, on-demand pain relief, relaxation and circulation; plus it will help keep your joints mobile.

Pad placement - shoulder pain

The objective is to place the pads either side of the spot where your shoulder pain is at its worst. The signal passes from one electrode to the other, therefore passing through the site of pain.

These are examples only. Please phone us if you need further advice.
