Getting to know your SportsMed TENS, ECS and EMS functions
Please read your User Guide before proceeding
The SportsMed machine offers 3 key functions:
Pain relief is available every day, when you need it, for as long as you need it - this is using sensory nerve stimulation or TENS
More rapid injury repair - this is using cell wall stimulation or ECS
Muscle strengthening - by stimulating motor nerves (EMS) to contract and release the muscle
Best Practice Injury management
All serious injuries should be professionally diagnosed and an injury management plan developed in consultation with your physiotherapist or doctor. Patient long term welfare is more important than a rushed return to sport before the injury has recovered.
Acute musculoskeletal injury management:
Stabilize the injury site to prevent any further damage
Manage the initial and on-going pain; TENS is a drug-free option
Seek medical diagnosis and ongoing management of the injury
Between medical visits, supplement clinical treatment with ECS electrotherapy to shorten the repair period
Minimize muscle atrophy; EMS is suitable
Rehabilitate by strengthening surrounding muscle; combine EMS with a specific exercise program
Return to vigorous activity gradually
Repetitive strain (over-use) injury management:
Refrain from the repeated activity - or modify how you are doing it
Manage the on-going pain; TENS is a drug-free option
If severe, seek medical diagnosis and ongoing management
Between medical visits, supplement clinical treatment with ECS electrotherapy to shorten the repair period
Minimize muscle atrophy by using EMS
Strengthen supporting muscles; EMS and exercise
When you return to the activity, modify posture, ergonomics or break-times
The SportsMed electrical stimulation machine - ideal for soft tissue damage
SportsMed for acute or repetitive strain injury
The ActivLife SportsMed device will help with a number of the above management steps, as follows:
Initial and ongoing pain relief (TENS)
Injury healing - cellular activity, circulation, inflammation, stiffness, scaring (ECS)
Avoiding muscle atrophy - while at rest (EMS)
Strengthening muscles - in combination with a manual exercise program (EMS)
SportsMed postoperative recovery
Recovering from surgery is similar to recovering from injury - both cause trauma to body tissue and cells. After surgery:
Initial and ongoing pain relief (TENS)
Manage stress - which can delay recovery (TENS)
Aid healing - cellular activity, circulation, inflammation, stiffness, scaring (ECS)
Avoid muscle atrophy - while at rest (EMS)
SportsMed to manage gout
Frequent attacks of gout can cause irreversible damage to the joint and nearby bone. Medical diagnosis and prompt treatment are highly advised. SportsMed can be used on its own or in conjunction with prescribed medication:
Initial and ongoing pain relief (TENS)
Reduce swelling and redness by removing waste fluid containing excess uric acid (ECS)
